Asked Between Sets

The questions our testers and readers ask most, answered the way we'd answer them at the side of the track: short, honest and practical.

Do I need a chest strap?
For steady runs and walks, a wrist sensor is fine. For intervals, lifting and cycling, a chest strap such as the Polar H10 or Garmin HRM-Pro is more responsive and accurate. More on heart rate.
Which watch is best for a first 5K?
The Garmin Forerunner 265 or the Coros Pace 3. Both have clear run screens and free structured beginner plans that grow with you.
Can I swim with all five watches?
Yes. All five are rated for swimming. Only the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is designed for recreational diving, with a depth gauge.
Why does my watch say the race was long?
Race courses are measured on the shortest possible line, and you weave around other runners. Add small GPS errors and a reading a little over the official distance is completely normal.
Will an Apple Watch work with Android?
No. The Apple Watch needs an iPhone and the Pixel Watch 3 needs Android. Garmin, Polar and Coros work with both.
How accurate are calorie numbers?
Treat them as rough estimates. They're useful for comparing one day with another, not for precise diet planning.
Is sleep tracking worth it?
Sleep duration and consistency are reliable and genuinely useful. The breakdown into light, deep and REM sleep is much less precise.
How often should I replace my watch?
Most last three to five years. Replace it when battery life no longer covers your longest session, or when it stops getting software updates. Battery care tips.
Does a smartwatch replace a coach?
No. It's an excellent assistant for data and structure, but a coach reads context, technique and motivation in a way no algorithm can yet.
