MultisportOne button, three sports
Triathlon mode strings swim, bike and run into one activity with transitions timed in between. Forerunner 265, Ultra 2, Vantage V3 and Pace 3 all offer it.
A sport mode is more than a label on your activity. It decides which sensors switch on, what the screen shows and how your effort is scored. Pick your discipline below and see which watch does the job best.
Top pick: Garmin Forerunner 265. Build an interval session in Garmin Connect, send it to the watch and it beeps you through warm-up, reps and recovery with a target pace on screen. Daily suggested workouts adapt to your recent load, which is gold for first-time half marathoners. The Coros Pace 3 runs a close second, with a structured workout builder and an excellent track mode at a lower price.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 now supports custom workouts and track detection, and the Polar Vantage V3 offers running power from the wrist. The Pixel Watch 3 gives real-time pace guidance but fewer structured options.
Top pick: Apple Watch Ultra 2. It counted lengths reliably across freestyle and breaststroke, auto-detected stroke type and rest at the wall, and its large display was the easiest to read through goggles. Open water mode traces your swim with GPS, and the depth gauge suits snorkellers.
The Forerunner 265 and Vantage V3 were nearly as accurate in the pool and offer drill logging. Tip for everyone: push off cleanly and pause briefly at the wall. Messy turns are what confuse lap counting most.
Top pick: Polar Vantage V3. Strength mode records heart rate, time under work and rest, and its sensor coped best with gripping. Pair a chest strap for the best data.
Garmin's strength mode counts reps automatically but miscounts slow, heavy lifts, so be ready to edit. Coros lets you build strength workouts with muscle maps. Apple and Google log the session and calories, but leave set tracking to third-party apps.
Top pick: Coros Pace 3. Load a GPX route from Komoot or the Coros app and the watch draws a breadcrumb line with turn alerts. A barometric altimeter tracks your climb, and weeks of battery mean you won't think about chargers on a multi-day walk.
The Polar Vantage V3 adds full offline maps, which is a real upgrade off-trail. The Ultra 2 has a backtrack feature that retraces your steps when lost.
Top pick: Garmin Forerunner 265. It connects to power meters and speed sensors over ANT+ and Bluetooth, and syncs indoor rides from Zwift. Polar and Coros also pair power meters cleanly.
On the bike, wrist heart rate suffers from road buzz and bent wrists, so a chest strap is strongly recommended.

MobilityLow-intensity modes keep easy days honest. The Pixel Watch 3 and Ultra 2 make them feel most natural.
It's tempting to hit "Run" for everything and sort it out later. But each mode changes how the watch works. In pool swim mode, GPS turns off and the accelerometer counts your push-offs. In strength mode, the watch watches for rest periods. In track mode, the GPS line is pinned to lane one. Choose the wrong mode and you'll get confusing numbers, and the training load your watch reports the next morning will be off too.
Every watch here lets you customise data screens per sport. A good rule from our coaching desk: no more than four numbers per screen. For easy runs, show heart rate and time only. For intervals, show lap pace, lap time and rep count. For swimming, show lengths and rest timer. You'll look at your wrist less and run better.
